Syncplicity mac client no longer supported

July 23rd, 2009 Author: Thai Categories: Macs

syncplicity_logo_colorI checked my inbox and found this email. I had tried syncplicity before as a beta tester and while it has its’ good points, the bad ones made me remove the application from my computer.

Our engineering team has recently completed a ground-up analysis of the Mac beta client and the investigation found some issues which require some major changes in the client. Because of this, we’ve decided to pull back the Mac client beta until which point the engineering team has time to make some major changes. We intend to reassess our engineering schedule early next year.

Unfortunately, this does mean that as of July 31st, you will no longer be able to use Syncplicity with a Mac computer.

This basically says they’re going to rewrite the mac client and release it at a later date.

First let’s list what it did right.

1. sync any computer to each other using their client program
2. free subscription gives you 2gb and sync two computers
3. if you invite a friend, you get 1gb for the referral. Though, I don’t know what they will get so their incentive to join may be less desirable.
4. syncs Google Docs, Zoho, and Scribd

What it didn’t get right (at least on the Mac side).

1. the installation and setup requires syncing of one folder and its content. You can’t pick multiple folders in multiple locations.
2. it is very slow. It took my computer nearly 2 days to sync a mere .8gb over cable modem.
3. it took too much system resources. I notice while it was running, everything else was slow. It also did not throttle the internet upload rate so my browsing suffered too. It turned my quad core into a 486 (early 90s computer) with a 56k modem hookup (if you don’t know what a 56k modem is, consider yourself lucky) to the internet.
4. the menu bar item needs to be monochromatic to match the rest of the icons there. Having a four sided fan with bright colors doesn’t sit well up in the corner of my mac.

After two weeks I uninstalled it and have not looked back until this email. Having re-evaluate it now, I still would not put it on my mac computer. I might try it on some of my PCs, though. I have since moved to Mozy and have not looked back. Enter B7QJPN and you’ll get 256mb additional space to your free 2GB for having me refer you.

Seamlessly use existing files, such as Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Adobe Acrobat PDFs already on their desktops, with Google Docs without the need to manually upload them.

  1. No trackbacks yet.
