Get iPod Touch 3.0 OS for Free!
My wife has an iPod Touch and she’s always behind in updates and new features because she feels she’s like a red headed step child when it comes to update from Apple. She is not alone. I don’t understand why Apple treats the iPod Touch so much different from their more hyped iPhone. Sure it makes them more money and gets all the media attention. Add a built in mic and bluetooth and the iPod Touch can be a phone too, via Skype.
First, you need to be running iTunes 8.2. Next you need to download these files according to which generation of iPod touch you have. First generation iPod Touch do not have hardware buttons for volume on the side nor do they have speakers. Second generation iPod Touch just came out not too long ago.

If the files are in .zip format, rename them .ipsw
When you have the file you need, plug your iPod Touch into your computer and hold down the ‘SHIFT‘ key as iTunes loads up. Click on update in the dialog box and navigate to where your downloaded file is.
If you have a Mac, hold down the ‘OPTION‘ key and click update and go to where the file is to upgrade to 3.0.
Please do this at your own risk. I do not have these files on my server nor have I tried it personally. If you’re doing this to save a few bucks, give back by buying a few apps from the app store or laugh at someone with a Zune. My wife won’t let me touch her iPod. I’m sort of an asian Tim Allen around my house….URRGGGHHH?

My old computer crashed and now I’m trying to sync my Ipod touch to my dads computer but I can’t do it without losing all my music, I’ve transferred my purchased items to the new computer but if I updated the ipod now I would lose all of my cds and playlists.
If your actual Hard Drive itself is faulty, get a new one then re-install using the disk that should have come with your PC and the key that should be on the certificate of authenticity on the case.
OS 3.0 is free. Plug your iTouch into your computer and click the Check for Updates button. If you are going to try to jailbreak, then choose donwload only (ie don’t install it right away).
