breadcrumbs

Many of you may have notice the address bar starting with Windows Vista having a new unique way of letting you finding out where you are in Windows Explorer. While most will welcome this change, some of you old school geeks who would rather have the full path with all the c:\ and \, would love to find a way to get this back. You can do it by pressing Alt+D in the window but that can get tedious.

The quickest solution is to install AveNoBreadCrumb

Desktop wallpaper rotator for Windows XP, Vista

June 29th, 2009

wallpapaI am a person who uses two operating systems every day. My desktop is a Mac and my laptop is PC. Unlike your typical fanboys I appreciate both and am not partial to either one. I see them as tools to get a job done. There are things on each OS that I wish the other one had. One such item is a desktop background rotators for Windows. OSX has one built in while only Windows 7 will start having one. For everyone using Vista or below, one solution is WallPapa. While there are many to choose from, you should only use one that takes little system resources and easy to configure.

Text message to any phone

June 16th, 2009

SMS (short message service) can be expensive. My carrier charges 15 cents a message…incoming or outgoing. Before I signed on a contract with built in messaging, I would wake up and hope that no one would text me so I can save a few cents a day. Even with my current plan, I am always careful of the messages I send and monitor my text message limit regularly.

For those who do not have unlimited Text Messaging, here is a great way to save on one half your text bill. Send outgoing text messages via email.

Sprint – phonenumber@messaging.sprintpcs.com
Verizon – phonenumber@vtext.com
T-Mobile - phonenumber@tmomail.com
AT&T – phonenumber@txt.att.net
AIM – +1phonenumber

Movie files avi cause desktop crash in vista and windows 7

June 5th, 2009

If you ever have problems with windows 7 crashing in a constant loop once you put an avi or any movie file on the desktop, then you are the victim of thumbnail cache error. There are many ways to fix this but the quickest and easiest is to disable thumbnail preview all together. A side benefit of this operation is your windows explorer will be much faster loading up. You can individually enable thumbnail view for a folder if you want in the future, but keep it off system wide to avoid the aforementioned problem above.

Here’s how:

1. Open up an explorer window, click on the ‘organize’ button on any folder and choose ‘folder and search’ options.
2. Click on the ‘view’ tab and check the ‘always show icons, never thumbnails’ checkbox.
3. Click OK, and you’re done.

Disable windows crash report windows 7

May 30th, 2009

Have you ever encountered a box while you’re using your computer where it says the application you were using has crashed? This box will prompt you to send a report to Microsoft. If you really think that this ‘sent’ report will get to Microsoft and that they will be on top of it to get your problems fixed, I have some time-share to sell you in Greenland.

You should first see what program is causing the error and either reinstall it or find out what you did exactly to cause the error. If after doing this and it still gives you the ‘crash’ box, this is what you do to get rid of future messages.

1. Click on the ‘start’ menu and go to control panel. When in the control panel, go to the ‘system’ icon. OR You can also right-click on ‘my computer’ icon and select Properties.
2. Click on the ‘Advanced’ tab in the new window that pops up.
3. within the advanced tab, click on ‘error reporting’
4. You can click on disable error reporting entirely, or for certain programs.
5. Once you’re done with your selection make sure to click ‘OK’ to save your changes.
