It’s no big secret I’m a big fan of wikipedia. Not only is it free which in my book is the number one reason, but also it is truly an example of a great equalizer that the founders of the ‘new’ internet had hope to foster. Where else on earth or at any time in our civilization is the near sum total of our knowledge this freely available for the most humble of souls to leaders of superpowers. Each passing year sees this collection of knowledge grow in leaps and bounds. It is also a very democratic way of presenting the information. What becomes commonly excepted memes become embedded in the article as genuine facts. This is sometimes its’ downfall as anyone but specifically enough people with the wrong knowledge can pass that information to wikipedia as facts.

Increasingly more people are ditching their landlines for mobile phones and voip. A friend of mine who use to work for a telephone company said phone company’s reliability and their infrastructures are the result of the cold war. There are lots of redundancies in phone lines to keep those system running in case of an emergency. When was the last time the power AND phone went out at your residence during a storm? As times have changed, even my friend has now switched from his fail proof landline to VOIP. This brings up an interesting question. What do you do when you want to send a fax and you have no phone line?

CompuServe started in 1979. By the time I was given my first computer, they were in their prime. Outside of the academic, military, or government bodies; this was the only way to get email and tech support for a PC user. In its’ hay-day it had over 1/2 a million users at any given time. Anyone who was interested in technology went to their forums and used their services. Those people that went there were being charged by the hour! Can you image having that kind of business model in today’s internet environment?

You may have not seen much updates lately but surely I have been working on this site. It’s just something you don’t see up front. I’ve tweaked some SEO stuff. I’ve made my site work in most browsers. I’ve promoted it by getting the word out. I’m still relatively green on all of this but I’ll be happy to tell everyone what I’ve done so that if it works, you can do the same. I’ve been keeping pretty good documentation of everything. Unlike most sites you’ve seen on how to get traffic, I am truly an outsider trying to squeeze as many page view as possible without stooping to questionable practices. I don’t already have a big site that I can syphon traffic from by simply getting a mention. I don’t have an established affiliate marketing machine to monetize my site…yet ;) Everything I’ve done, I’m doing by reading other site and coming up with my own conclusions to what I think will work. I’m going to document it here since I feel that it is every part of technology as a new iPhone.
“If you can dream it, you can do it. Always remember that this whole thing was started with a dream and a mouse.” With those words, Walt Disney set out to build an empire from our dreams and fantasies. Today I stumbled upon something truly magical. Disney has put their whole park into the realm of virtual tourism. True your kids won’t talk to you for a while if you opt to get them there virtually instead of physically. Think of the long line and humidity you’re sparing your family, though. Using over 450GB worth of about 85,000 photos, they are able to recreate the whole of Disneyland Paris. Just install google earth and start your virtual vacation.
