Stop hunt and peck, learn to type

June 2nd, 2009

typing-mavis-beacon-teaches-typing-deluxe-1broderbund.jpegDo you remember the early days of computers when after you’ve purchased your boxy beige unit and brought it home to find a few free programs falling out of the box? Hopefully you didn’t just flip the shipping box over to get to the contents. One of those items was the ‘Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing’. I think I’ve found those disks rummaging through old computer documentation boxes as much as old AOL disks. Now there is a way to get that kind of typing program for FREE and without running Windows 95. The site is http://www.typingweb.com/.

I’ve tried it and it works pretty well for an online FLASH /AJAX / JAVASCRIPT site. In fact I would say it works better than the old Mavis Beacon Typing program. When you register, it lets you save your progress and see how much you improve over time. On my first try I got an average of 51 WPM with a Gross speed of 67 WPM and an 99% accuracy. My problem keys were ETUC. Of course if you don’t want to divulge your information you can just start typing right away without ever registering.

Google released an API for ‘Google Talk’ that will allow developers to write applications that piggyback off the Instant Messaging platform.

It is currently only available in the developer sandbox.

Here’s how to do it.

1. go to http://talkgadget.google.com/talkgadget/sandbox and send this link to the person you want to play or chat with :

3. In the address box, put in:

Disable windows crash report windows 7

May 30th, 2009

Have you ever encountered a box while you’re using your computer where it says the application you were using has crashed? This box will prompt you to send a report to Microsoft. If you really think that this ‘sent’ report will get to Microsoft and that they will be on top of it to get your problems fixed, I have some time-share to sell you in Greenland.

You should first see what program is causing the error and either reinstall it or find out what you did exactly to cause the error. If after doing this and it still gives you the ‘crash’ box, this is what you do to get rid of future messages.

1. Click on the ‘start’ menu and go to control panel. When in the control panel, go to the ‘system’ icon. OR You can also right-click on ‘my computer’ icon and select Properties.
2. Click on the ‘Advanced’ tab in the new window that pops up.
3. within the advanced tab, click on ‘error reporting’
4. You can click on disable error reporting entirely, or for certain programs.
5. Once you’re done with your selection make sure to click ‘OK’ to save your changes.

Moisture damaged iPhones

May 27th, 2009

Anyone who has ever visited West Texas can sympathized with me how dry and uneventful the terrain is here. The advantage however is my iPhone will probably not get subjected to moisture damaging level like others throughout the country. Unless you live in the desert, in which you would welcome any form of moisture even if it’s conjugated in your iPhone.

Apparently Apple built a little moisture detector inside each iPhone. This immersion sensor stops the iphone from working in case it gets wet. People who take their iPhone with them to work out stand to tip this sensor eventually.

Therefore, it is best to leave your iPhone in the gym bag or at home when you go work out. Since I live in such a dry place, having moisture buildup is much harder than if I lived in Houston or the Amazon Basin.

What I want to know is why Apple still markets exercising aids for the iPhone. Programs such as RunKeeper, can only hurt your little iPod or iPhone eventually. Aside from putting your phone in a zipped sandwich bag hung around your neck, I do not see anyway of using a workout app in conjunction with your iPhone attached to your sweaty palms.

It looks like Apple may be listening and has loosen their replacement policy.

NBA scores twitter updates

May 25th, 2009

I was away from home most of the weekend and needed updates on the games. One of the things I’m quickly learning about twitter is how valuable the live search term updates can be. Google is the king of search but twitter is the king of real-time search. Imagine making stock decisions on data that is 15 minutes delay vs real-time. Now imagine if you have the ability to know what the world is talking about right at this moment. Or even better yet, what everyone within a 100 mile radius is chatting about. How much would this information be worth to advertisers or information collectors? This is the power of twitter. Back to the reason of this post, I found http://www.sportsblogtweets.com/. I think this site will get tons of traffic as twitter gets more popular. Go Denver! (I always root for the underdogs)
