LaCie iamaKey usb flash drive

July 13th, 2009

iamaKey_angleI remember when I got my 4GB verbatim USB Flash drive from Sam’s Club. I paid nearly 90 dollars for it. This was of course a few years ago when flash drives were still fairly new and expensive. Today companies are giving it away as promotional materials like pens and scratch pads. I would not put any valuable information in those freebies. If they’re anything like the pens, your data is safer in the hands of Bernard Madoff. What do you never leave home without? Or shouldn’t I need to rephrase. Your keys! Why not put your USB Flash drive on the chain and keep everything together?

Get iPod Touch 3.0 OS for Free!

July 11th, 2009

iphoneatworkwelkjwMy wife has an iPod Touch and she’s always behind in updates and new features because she feels she’s like a red headed step child when it comes to update from Apple. She is not alone. I don’t understand why Apple treats the iPod Touch so much different from their more hyped iPhone. Sure it makes them more money and gets all the media attention. Add a built in mic and bluetooth and the iPod Touch can be a phone too, via Skype.

CompuServe shut down by AOL after 30 years

July 10th, 2009

compuservesnoopyCompuServe started in 1979. By the time I was given my first computer, they were in their prime. Outside of the academic, military, or government bodies; this was the only way to get email and tech support for a PC user. In its’ hay-day it had over 1/2 a million users at any given time. Anyone who was interested in technology went to their forums and used their services. Those people that went there were being charged by the hour! Can you image having that kind of business model in today’s internet environment?

HP Photosmart D7145 Vista XP Drivers

July 10th, 2009

HP comes out with new printer in what seems like every 30 days. When I’m at the electronic store I see a new printer with incremental model numbers that distinguish it from its’ predecessor every time I look. With thousands if not hundreds of thousands of printers to wade through to find your exact print, it can be dificult to locate the software needed to get your old printer running on a new OS. If you are looking for windows vista or xp driver for your HP photosmart d7145, here is what you will get.

Basically, HP somehow forgot they made this model and does not display an information page for the product.

Make website more readable with readability

July 8th, 2009

Have you ever gone to a website that had some information you would love to read but can’t due to some design oversight? Whether it is dark font on dark background, small fonts, bad spacing, narrow margins, cluttered screen, or anything else that distracts you from the article you are reading; this little tool I found will help you clear out the mess.

http://lab.arc90.com/experiments/readability/

All you need to do is move the white ‘readability’ button to your browser’s toolbar so it can be readily available where ever you go on the web. If you don’t have a toolbar for links enabled you can also drag it to your ‘favorites’ in IE or ‘bookmarks’ in FF.

Now whenever you go to a site that is hard to read, just click on the ‘readability’ on your toolbar or in your bookmarks and the page will be transformed into a white page with black, easy to read, font.

An alternative to this method is to simply highlight the text and paste it into your favorite text editor or word processor. The only drawback is you may accidentally paste some web element too. What ever method you choose, just make it easier on your eyes will ensure you have a long more enjoyable web experience without wanting to jab your eye out with a dull knife after read a site with dancing green leprechauns tiled in the background on a size 6 script font.
